The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has added five new modules to its Bitesize eLearning programme, further strengthening the training available to members of the trade association as part of their subscription benefits.

The new modules cover ATA Carnets, Representation, Rules of Origin, Sustainability, and Valuation, while the existing Classification module has been fully updated for 2026. Each course is designed to deliver practical, bite-sized learning focused on real-world customs, compliance and trade challenges.

The ATA Carnets module explains how carnets replace customs declarations, suspend duty and VAT, and help traders avoid delays and unnecessary costs. Representation explores the legal responsibilities and liabilities involved, while Rules of Origin focuses on correct duty application, origin declarations and avoiding border delays. The Sustainability module introduces freight emissions measurement and practical ways to embed greener logistics, and the Valuation module explains customs valuation methods to ensure accurate declarations and compliance.

All modules can be taken individually, alongside the mandatory CDS Compliance module, which centres on import home-use declarations and the consequences of compliance errors. Existing modules in this suite can each be undertaken separately and include: Standard Export Declaration; Export from Customs Warehouse; Outward Processing; Inward Processing; Temporary Admission; and Returned Goods Relief.

In addition to CDS Compliance, the existing BIFA Bitesize content also includes: Preparing to Trade; Incoterms 2020; Inward and Outward Processing; Customs Warehousing; Classification; Returned Goods Relief; Paying HMRC, and Customs Procedure Codes.

Since launching in February 2025, BIFA Bitesize has seen strong uptake, with more than 2,300 active users completing over 8,800 courses.

Carl Hobbis, member services director at BIFA, said: “BIFA Bitesize is a suite of eLearning that has been developed as part of BIFA’s ongoing commitment to provide a variety of training options, aimed at enhancing knowledge in areas critical to freight forwarding, customs compliance, and international trade. BIFA Bitesize gives full trading members unlimited access to eLearning as part of their membership fee. The response has been tremendous, and it’s proving to be a genuinely game-changing initiative for our sector.”

Steve Parker, director general of BIFA, added: “These new modules reinforce our commitment to delivering exceptional value and high-quality training. They support both new entrants and experienced professionals, ensuring members’ staff have access to relevant, up-to-date learning.”

Keeping both warehouse staff and commercial vehicle fleet drivers safe is a challenge for any logistics business. When the workforce involved is vast, as with Amazon’s, the difficulties are even greater, reports David Priestman.

If workers like a personal protective equipment (PPE) product they will use it. Setting a high bar for quality is therefore a good strategy, as we all learned from Covid. That premise underpinned a discussion at the Amazon Business Reshape conference.

Antoine McNeal is the head of Global Health and Safety (H&S) Procurement for Amazon. His team utilise data-driven decisions in PPE and material handling equipment (MHE) sourcing, partly because of the sheer volume of products involved. His budget is a staggering $200bn and is helping to lead a change in safety practices and equipment. One specific example is the introduction of enhanced hand protection to avoid finger injuries: the ‘Impact Glove’.

Asking why safety is critical in warehousing and distribution may seem naïve or callous, but it gets to the root of the issue. With 1000 H&S staff out of a workforce of one million, Amazon aim to be the benchmark for safety in logistics. McNeal revealed that 2024 saw a 6% fall in injuries (across both delivery and warehouse operations).

Predictive Analytics

“Safety first, people always,” is McNeal and Amazon’s declared mantra. If safety is improved the company benefits from the reduction in time off work by staff. “We can move the market,” McNeal states, “by engaging demand for new or more products.”

When Amazon buy, the volumes involved can create their own supply, either by new suppliers emerging or via product innovation. A robust catalogue of PPE products available has been created, with supplier locations all checked.

Every country that Amazon operates in has different H&S standards, so data sets are required to drive decision-making. Data is collected based on the demand for and consumption of PPE. Forecasts can then be made. “Having no stock-outs is imperative, so we check inventory and spot risks,” says McNeal. “We can normalize data based on standards used internationally for items like boots and gloves.” PPE is sourced from as many as 2500 suppliers, globally.

Stay in stock

Incident data is also analysed, of course, as well as employee feedback. “We treat them like our customers,” McNeal insists. Amazon’s ‘Dragon Fly’ tool allows its staff to submit ideas and raise problems regarding safety. Inputs are managed at local sites, but the data is also fed into a global set for analysis – 130,000 submissions per year.

Once Bitten…

Speed matters in business, a concept that Amazons arguably understands better than anyone else. If there is an incident or accident a solution is required, as soon as possible. “We try to solve these problems in advance,” states McNeal, “by working in partnership with our PPE suppliers. Time is critical. If we know what products are needed, how do we shorten the lead time?”

Having PPE on-site, when and where needed, is one answer. PPE vending machines, unlocked and accessed by staff using RFID, are being installed. “If we know what’s used and when, and what’s not getting used, we have the data in our dashboard to improve distribution,” McNeal concludes. Amazon state that PPE is 30% cheaper when vending machines are used as there is less waste and more re-usage.
Other examples of H&S assistance include delivery drivers being given extra lights for when working in hours of darkness, being advised about bad weather via their driver App and even warned about aggressive dogs in the vicinity, something I wish I had as a paperboy way back when!

McCann Logistics has strengthened its UK fleet with 12 new Renault Trucks T High 480 6×2 TML Turbo Compound tractor units, marking the company’s first-ever move to the Renault Trucks brand. Two of the vehicles will feature ANDYSMANCLUB’s “It’s okay to talk” message, reinforcing McCann’s support for the men’s mental health charity.

The Immingham-based operator chose the T High after a competitive tender process, praising Renault Trucks and local dealer Thompson Commercials for their driver-focused approach, responsive service, and strong whole-life cost proposition. “From day one, Thompson Commercials listened,” said Mark Brighton, General Manager at McCann Logistics. “They delivered everything we asked for – from driver comfort to a maintenance programme we could trust.”

Powered by Renault Trucks’ DE13 Turbo Compound 480hp engine, the new trucks are designed for long-distance haulage and feature fuel-saving technologies such as Optivision map-based gear shifting and Smart Torque Control. The high-cab units have been customised with rear lockers, microwaves, and inverters for driver comfort, following trials and feedback from McCann’s drivers.

McCann, part of the Brickability Group, operates more than 180 trailers and a 12-vehicle UK truck fleet, serving construction and industrial customers nationwide. The new Renaults will each cover around 1,400 miles per week, supporting both group and third-party deliveries.

The partnership with ANDYSMANCLUB began at a local Armed Forces Day event. Two of the new trucks will carry the charity’s branding, including a personal tribute to a McCann driver’s late son, Sean Dawson. Brighton added: “Supporting AMC is incredibly important to us. If even one man decides to attend a support group because they saw one of our vehicles, then it’s worth everything.”

Sean Gill, Regional Lead at ANDYSMANCLUB, said: “Every journey they make takes our message into towns, villages, and workplaces we may never physically reach. McCann Logistics aren’t just supporting a charity; they’re helping carry hope, connection, and support to men who might be one moment away from needing it.”

Thompson Commercials will maintain the fleet and provide ongoing driver support. Keith Ottley, Sales Projects Manager, commented: “We are delighted McCann has chosen Renault Trucks and proud to support the vital work of ANDYSMANCLUB through this fleet.”

Premier Logistics has completed the acquisition and merger of Northampton-based WT Transport, creating a larger, more diversified logistics group with increased capacity, operational scale and long-term growth ambitions.

The deal brings together two established, family-run logistics businesses and significantly strengthens their combined position within the UK freight and warehousing market.

Expanded Scale and Capability

Following the acquisition, the combined group now operates a fleet of 110 vehicles supported by a workforce of around 220 employees. Warehousing capacity totals approximately 330,000 sq ft, strategically located close to the M1 corridor, enabling efficient nationwide distribution.

The enlarged operation is expected to generate a combined annual turnover in excess of £30 million, positioning the business to compete for larger contracts while continuing to support existing regional and national customers.

Complementary Networks and Services

Premier Logistics brings strong expertise in regional and national distribution, while WT Transport enhances the group’s service offering through its established pallet network memberships and accredited warehousing operations. Together, the businesses offer a broader range of freight, storage and value-added logistics services, improving flexibility and resilience across the network.

The merger enables shared resources, streamlined operations and greater efficiency, while maintaining the service standards and customer focus associated with both companies.

Shared Values and Leadership Continuity

As family-owned businesses, cultural alignment and leadership continuity have been central to the integration. The combined group will continue to be led by experienced management teams, with a focus on long-term sustainability, investment in people and succession planning.

The acquisition reflects a shared commitment to maintaining strong customer relationships while adapting to the evolving demands of the logistics sector.

Positioned for Future Growth

The move comes amid ongoing consolidation within the UK logistics industry, as operators seek scale, operational resilience and wider service capabilities. By joining forces, Premier Logistics and WT Transport aim to enhance their competitive position while remaining agile and customer-focused.

With increased capacity, broader service offerings and aligned business values, the combined group is well placed to capitalise on future market opportunities and support continued growth across the UK logistics landscape.

With supply chains facing some of the most volatile conditions in recent years, a new UK Supply Chain Professional (SCP) Club was officially launched at an event at Hampton Manor last week. The club aims to bring together supply chain professionals from across industries to share expertise, collaborate on common challenges, and drive innovation at a time when global networks are under unprecedented strain.

The SCP Club will serve as a space for honest conversation, peer learning, and collective problem-solving, delivering tangible value in the form of great venues, food and experiences.

“Our vision is simple,” said Jenny Lowrie, Director, UK SCP Club. “There is a massive knowledge gap and pressing need for a forum which unites supply chain professionals in spaces where we can learn from one another, share experiences, and build meaningful, long-lasting connections.

“Supply chains are cool. They’re complex, impactful, and at the centre of how the world works. If my four-year-old doesn’t get a Barbie Dreamhouse this Christmas, it’s either because a supply chain has failed, or my own S&OP process at home has! These systems shape every part of our lives. And by bringing our community together, we can debate, challenge, and grow in a way that moves both our industry and our own professional development forward.”

The UK SCP Club’s launch comes at a critical moment as supply chains grapple with more complexity than ever according to Dave Food, Lecturer and Industry Strategist at the University of Warwick. “When professionals share knowledge openly, whether it’s around planning, forecasting, resilience, technology or talent, we build stronger networks and smarter responses. The SCP club will play a vital role in helping supply chain leaders to stay ahead of the challenges inherent in tomorrow’s supply chains.”

Jan Kraaijeveld, Slimstock’s Strategic S&OP Expert echoed this sentiment: “Too often, businesses tackle supply chain challenges in isolation when the real breakthroughs happen through collaboration. The SCP Club is a place where expertise can be exchanged freely, whether you’re building an S&OP process from scratch or refining mature operations.”

Launched at the first event of its kind, the club brings together a diverse audience, from organisations actively implementing new processes, to partners and consultants specialising in change management and operational transformation. Focused on practical insights, real case studies, and collaborative problem-solving, it aims for members to leave each session having gained knowledge, built relationships and fuelled progression.

Paralympian and World Champion Coxwain Erin Kennedy shared a powerful message in her keynote, reinforcing the importance of leadership, culture and teamwork which underpin the principles of the UK SCP Club: “Even in the toughest conditions, people can achieve amazing things when they support each other. Community is often the difference between struggling and succeeding.”

“As it evolves, the SCP Club will be shaped by the people it is designed to help through ideas, and what’s most important to our community, and we can’t wait to announce details of the next one.” Lowrie concludes.

Optix, provider of driver safety management and fleet efficiency solutions, is celebrating 25 years of empowering commercial drivers and road users to return safely home. The anniversary comes during a year of significant international growth, marked by global senior hires and increased investment in technologies dedicated to preventing accidents and making roads safer.

A major milestone has been the launch of operations in Europe. This expansion will strengthen the company’s global reach and enable it to connect closely to local markets, providing customers with on-the-ground support and services. With established operations across Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Europe, Optix supports customers in more than 60 countries.

This growth has been bolstered by a number of senior hires, including Damian Penney, who joins as chief revenue officer. Formerly VP EMEA at Lytx, Damian will focus on driving revenue growth and building strategic partnerships that can help fleets to enhance safety, efficiency and productivity.

New technological developments include the launch of Optix’s predictive fatigue detection system designed to react, prevent and predict risks across every journey. With a unique algorithm that can detect 11 indicators of driver fatigue, combined with Early Warning Control Tower Services as well as a predictive Fatigue Forecast Platform, the Optix Fatigue Solution is able to proactively detect driver fatigue and prevent accidents and collisions.

Optix’s central control tower, which reviews up to two million videos per month, enables rapid assessment of critical-risk events and is able to notify managers within three minutes. Last year alone, Optix’s fatigue detection technology was instrumental in helping to save over 80,000 lives.

Our commitment to best-in-class technology has enabled us to keep over 240,000 drivers worldwide safe over the last 25 years.

said Inge-Marie Hilligan, Group Executive for Product and Culture at Optix.

We are very proud of all we have achieved already but there is still work to be done. As we grow we hope to have a positive impact on even more drivers and to fulfil our vision where all road users end their journey Safely Home.

Launched in 2000, Optix began as a pioneer of ‘How’s my driving?’ stickers on commercial vehicles. Recognising the power of video to reduce on-road risk, the company quickly expanded to develop a suite of innovative safety solutions under the name of DriveRisk, before becoming Optix in 2023. Today, its solutions are used by more than 1 million vehicles in more than 60 countries worldwide.

As the world marks the International Day of Disabled People on 3 December, the logistics sector is reminded of its responsibility and opportunity, to drive greater accessibility across global supply chains. As an industry that keeps economies running, logistics has a powerful platform to champion inclusion and ensure disabled people are not overlooked.

A Critical Workforce Opportunity

Labour shortages, rising skills demands and rapid digitalisation continue to shape the sector. Broadening access to disabled talent is not only the right thing to do, it supports resilience, innovation and long-term competitiveness.

Disabled people remain underrepresented in many areas of logistics, yet the industry’s breadth of roles means there is huge potential for greater participation.

Improving Accessibility on the Ground

Warehouses, transport hubs and distribution centres can become more inclusive through relatively straightforward adjustments. Wider walkways, adjustable workstations, clearer visual cues, improved lighting and accessible welfare facilities all contribute to safer, more efficient workplaces.

Such improvements don’t just benefit disabled workers, they enhance operations for all staff, including an ageing workforce.

International Day of Disabled People

Inclusive Recruitment for a Modern Sector

Today’s logistics industry includes far more than traditional warehouse or driving jobs. With the rise of automation, data-driven operations and remote monitoring, many roles – such as planning, analytics, customer support and IT can be adapted for flexible or hybrid working.

Inclusive recruitment practices, clearer job descriptions and fair workplace adjustments help open the door to skilled disabled professionals who can bring fresh perspectives to the sector.

Technology as an Accessibility Enabler

The ongoing technological shift in logistics offers major opportunities for inclusion. Automation reduces physical strain, wearable devices support workers with mobility or sensory needs, and AI-powered systems make communication easier. Remote-control operations and digital monitoring also allow for roles that can be performed off-site.

When implemented thoughtfully, technology becomes a powerful enabler of accessibility and not a barrier.

Driving Inclusion Across the Supply Chain

As a global industry employing millions, logistics can set a strong example by placing inclusion at the centre of long-term strategy. This means designing accessible workplaces, training staff on inclusive practices, ensuring disabled voices are represented and building accessibility into digital transformation plans.

A more inclusive logistics sector is not just fairer – it is more resilient, innovative and better equipped for the future.
